It’s been a long time coming, but Newfoundland’s Sherman Downey – along with a crackerjack band – is finally making his way back to the mainland and a Halifax show at The Carleton on Thursday, September 8th. Show time is a civilized 7:30 PM and tickets are $25 + HST.
With his unique brand of radio-friendly and folky foot stompers, Sherman Downey has not only solidified himself as one of Newfoundland & Labrador’s most treasured artists, but as a nationally revered songwriter. His songs have won over listeners from his homeland to the mainland and beyond – all the while collecting a multitude of impressive accolades.
His latest release New Beautiful transitions from the beautiful to the gritty, from simple instrumentation to lush arrangements. Whether singing about letting loose in the local dance hall, people-watching from the front porch, or playing with love in out-of-the-way gas stations, Sherman speaks to those of us curious about exploring new pathways.
For his 2022 fall tour of the Maritimes, Sherman is bringing some of his favourite musicians and collaborators on the road including guitarist Phil Churchill, drummer Paul Lockyer, bassist Scott Sheppard, and keyboardist Noah Hamilton.
In 2021 – in addition to being nominated for ECMA’s Folk Recording of the Year – Sherman was named MusicNL’s Solo Artist of the Year as well as the Ron Hynes / SOCAN Songwriter of the Year. In 2022 New Beautiful was named MusicNL’s Album of the year.
