Cape Breton comes to town with headliners The Lotoyas, and able support from The Donald Hinson Calabrese Group and Carmen Townsend(!), to gang up for night at The Carleton on Friday, September 1st. Show time is 8 PM and tickets for this triple-header are only $20 + HST. Capers assemble!
The original line-up for the show featured Collette Deveaux but she had to drop out. The – very – good news, is that one of our favourite artists, Carmen is filling in. She doesn’t get to town often so don’t miss the chance to see her – along with the other acts, of course!
The Lotoyas (lot-of-yous) are an alternative rock band from Sydney Nova Scotia. Their songs are influenced by the Island they call home, and the musical culture they’ve been immersed in for the past 3 decades. Andrew Greig and Rob Harris have been songwriting in various projects for over 2 decades. This project blends their songs in to achieve consistent duelling guitars and supportive vocal harmonies. Songs are backed by one of the hardest working rhythm sections in Cape Breton. Redmond MacDougall and Chris MacDonald provide structure that is dynamic and driving.
The Donald Hinson Calabrese Group grew out of longtime musical friendships and collaborations. Donald played music in Cape Breton bands with Thomas Allen (drums), Shannon Ezzat (guitar) and Ben Furey (also Guitar) – all gifted instrumentalists and harmonizers – and playing his songs with them makes him feel very excited and lucky. He saw friend Mads Grace singing Queen’s “I Want to Break Free” at Karaoke and she agreed to join. She also plays trombone. They’ve played in many bands and the music sounds a bit like Vic Chessnut, Loose Fur, and Lhasa.
Cape Breton’s Carmen Townsend is a 4 time Music Nova Scotia Award winning artist and has most recently picked up an ECMA for Rising Star Recording of the year. She was named Best Female Artist by local Coast Reader’s and was also invited to take part in National Hockey Day where she shared the stage with Dave Bidini, Sarah Harmer and Chris Murphy (Sloan). Upon releasing her debut album in January 2011, she was selected to be the opening act for Heart’s cross Canada tour and has also shared the stage with INXS , showcased internationally at SXSW, The Great Escape Festival and Liverpool Sound City. She also spent 11weeks in Australia and performed at The Woodford Folk Festival as well as The Peats Ridge Festival.
Ms. Townsend is currently writing her 2nd release and will be travelling to New York City to co-write with Grammy Award winning songwriter Jesse Harris. Her self penned Without My Love was also featured on ABC this summer in a television series. Carmen’s first single will also be featured on Lost Girl and in the indie film Love Me. She was selected out of hundreds of entires as a semi-finalist for the She’s The One Emerging Female Contest at the Ottawa Blues Festival. Ms. Townsend has also performed with the Halifax local Jubilee Swing Orchestra and a future album collaboration with John Wesley Chisholm is in the works. Carmen was also featured at this years Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival and Celtic Colours.
” If Rock and Roll was walking down the street …it would be wearing a Carmen Townsend T-Shirt” – Matt Andersen.
