One is reticent to toss around a term like “supergroup,” but no other word really fits for The Carleton’s 15th anniversary presentation of three of Canada’s most cherished songwriters: Myles Goodwyn (April Wine), Matt Minglewood (The Minglewood Band) and Bryan Potvin (The Northern Pikes). Together for the first time, this trio will perform two shows on our stage: Thursday, June 29th and Friday, June 30th (this one). Show time is 8 PM and tickets – while they last – are $50 + HST.
Myles Goodwyn, singer, guitarist, writer, producer and leader of the multi-Platinum selling rock band April Wine, has shaped and directed the group from its earliest beginnings. April Wine has sold over 10 million recordings worldwide.
Myles Goodwyn’s voice is as distinctive and immediately recognizable as his song writing skills are prolific. Myles and the other members of April Wine were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame in 2010.
Goodwyn received the prestigious East Coast Music Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 and the SOCAN National Achievement Award in 2002. In 2016 he released his memoir named, Just Between You and Me, which became an instant best seller on the Globe and Mail`s Non-Fiction List. His second book, Elvis and Tiger (fiction) was published in 2018 and was also very well received.
Matt Minglewood grew up in North Sydney, Nova Scotia in a large and loving extended family of twelve. At an early age he remembers sitting on grandfather Batherson’s knee listening to him, completely enthralled by his fiddle playing as he bounced him up and down. At the tender age of four he sang in front of his first audience, singing a couple of Gaelic songs and the writing was on the wall. At the age of six he started fiddle lessons, moved on to the piano at eight and by his teens was in love with the guitar.
His music and song writing has the natural universality one only hears from a born storyteller. The songs can be somewhat autobiographical as in ‘Me and the Boys’, a song about carefree days of his youth or social issues he puts forth in ‘Long Way From Texas’. Many of Matt’s tunes grapple with the universal feelings of passion, frustrations, hope, loneliness, love, disappointment and regret as well as his deep love of the Maritimes. They are always reflected his life around him and what he is feeling at the time. “Me & The Boys” was recorded by southern-rock legend Charlie Daniels on his CD of the same name. Many major artists (such as Jeff Healey, Jimmie Rankin, Duck Dunn, (Bassist for Eric Clapton, Neil Young and the Blues Brothers), Colin James, Downchild Blues Band, Kenny Neal, and Grammy award winning Blues harp player Charlie Musselwhite) just to name a few have joined Matt on stage and CD. You never know who may show up to “ sit in “ on any given night!!
Bryan Potvin began guitar lessons at the age of 13 in Victoria, B.C. His family re-located to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where he continued his music studies. In 1984, Bryan, along with Jay Semko, Don Schmid and Merl Bryck formed The Northern Pikes. The band signed a world-wide recording contract with Virgin Records in the winter of 1986. Their seven-album catalogue sold in excess of 1 million units globally and garnered the band eight Juno Award nominations. In 1993, the group took a six-year hiatus, citing fatigue. With fellow band member Jay Semko, Potvin co-wrote the theme for the television series Due South.
From 1994 to 2000, Potvin was the A&R manager for PolyGram in Canada. He worked with such artists as Tegan & Sara, Duane Steele, Finger Eleven, Zuckerbaby and The Barstool Prophets. Potvin released his first solo recording project, Heartbreakthrough, in July 2000. The song “Read Between The Lines” was nominated for Best New Rock/Alternative Recording at the Canadian Radio Music Awards.
Bryan continues to play with the Pikes, as well as with duo partner Kevin Kane from The Grapes of Wrath, also now a full-time member of The Northern Pikes
