Shaolin is a four-piece rock band from Halifax, NS, made up of virtuosic guitar duo and long time friends Jack Philips and Brennon Mackinnon, drummer and lead vocalist Mitch Poirier, and bassist Mackenzie Adams. They met while all studying guitar at NSCC, and quickly bonded over their love of progressive rock and heavy music. Together they serve a multifaceted style, with each member writing and contributing compositions to the group. Shaolin is just as comfortable jamming out on simple funk riffs, (like those featured in their newest release, “Hey”) as they are ripping through head scratching, odd time and pseudo-metal passages (heard in their April 2021 single, “Aunt Acid”).
Postfun’s sound has been described as “Astro-Folk”. The writing screams inspiration from folk artists and singer songwriters, though it is paired with modern synth tones, effects pedals and unconventional vocal editing. The newest single, The River is a Folk Song, was produced by John Mullane of In Flight Safety and session player Dale Murray included pedal steel guitar on the track. John’s modern production of local artists has never failed to yield stunning production quality and Dale’s expertise lends the track a dreamy and sometimes dark and sinister ambiance.
The band’s instrumentation includes lead guitar by Seth Voliere, Drums by Thomas Hart, Bass guitar by Mackenzie Adams and several electronic instruments, keyboards and saxophone steered by Kevin Laing. The band includes Bouzouki in their live shows. For future projects, the band is experimenting with sequencing and sampling.
