Three eclectic, yet simpatico, local acts – Lashes, Topless Models and Special Costello – gang up for a show at The Carleton on Thursday, August 18th. Show time is 7:30 PM and tickets are only $10 + HST.
Lashes is a Halifax based electronic post punk loop project.
The first studio album under the name Lashes was released on September 27, 2021. At the beginning of this year, we decided to change our band name from Labor Camp to Lashes in hopes of reflecting our changed sound and allow the band to be more approachable. “When The Internet Calls” is a departure from our original John Maus worship style. We set out to make the album by creating a vagrant to be our protagonist, our idea was to create someone who embodied a lot of the insensitivity and self indulgence we felt we see in other men and ourselves. Our thought was, although bashful in nature, the truth is a lot of men are very lonely and withdrawn without a place to express themselves apart from lashing out.
Whether it be via their explosive live shows, razor sharp hooks or their relatable storytelling Topless Models is aiming to pull you into their world, pour you a drink, and offer you a seat at the head of their table. Originally from the small island of Cape Breton, this Halifax, Nova Scotia-based five-piece unveiled their alt-rock sound in 2019, packing one of the local dives with a full room of rowdy irregulars. The boys continue to play crowded shows to enthusiastic fans and have no plans on slowing down.
Currently part of Beverly Glenn-Copeland touring combo, Jeremy Costello self-releases music as Special Costello, a moniker under which he records solo or with local friends like Saxophone player Nick Dourado or guitarist Dave Burns. His lyrics are sincerely woven poetic enunciations that balance between introspective emotions and existential philosophical demands. Lyrics from a spirit that is in love without an object, unconditional, mirroring his very own subconscious inner being. Glimpses of Synth-Pop, psychedelic rock nuances, traces of new romantic utopia, infantile Casio minimalism, Shoegaze haze, drama wave: Special Costello blends many styles, uniting all in his very own musing grandeur of pop music.
