One of Canada’s most under-rated songwriters, Nathan Wiley, brings a full band to The Carleton to celebrate the release of his new EP – Modern Magic – for a HUFF show on Sunday, September 5th. Opening the night is another artist with a new record, Dusted III, the solo project from Brian Borcherdt, now living back in Nova Scotia. Show time is 7:30 PM and tickets will be $30 + HST. Two sensational artists on the same stage, the same night; you can’t beat that with a stick…

Summerside, PEI’s Nathan Wiley first earned acclaim for his 2002 debut Bottom Dollar, which won the East Coast Music Award for Alternative Album of the Year, and was chosen by Billboard Magazine as one of the top ten albums of 2002. His blend of classic sounds with a modern, slightly world weary perspective struck a chord with listeners, as songs full of subtle melodies and lyrics addressing those unquenchable yearnings inside all of us wormed their way into their ears.
In the years that followed, Wiley has made good on the promise of Bottom Dollar with the ECMA-winning sophomore album High Low (2004), the Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) produced effort, The City Destroyed Me (2007), and Bandits (2015). Nathan has shared the stage with artists like Blue Rodeo, Sarah Harmer, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Matt Mays, Ron Sexsmith and many more, while his work has appeared on TV, film and stage.
He now returns with a six song EP, Modern Magic.
“I never want to make the same record twice, and I started hearing this sound in my head that was less about guitars, and more about synths and horns.”
His most collaborative recording yet, Modern Magic features members of Halifax’s well known R&B band the Mellotones, as well as appearances by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Ed Toth (The Doobie Brothers), Rob Crowell (Deer Tick), as well as many others.
“I was lucky enough to work with some musical friends that I’ve made throughout my career on this new record and I couldn’t be happier with the experience.”
Recorded between Halifax, NS, and Summerside, PE, the new recording explores themes like magic, love, lust and narcissism.
Brian Borcherdt aka Dusted is best known as founding member of the Polaris Prize-shortlisted electro-experimental band HolyFuck. This project serves as a vehicle for more traditional songwriting, although the sound retains many of the experimental elements he’s become known for. Dusted III offers a meditation on change and rebirth that all of us can relate to at this moment.
