Description:

Willie Nile " a "Nile" ated us at the Carleton:

,,

Anyone who knows me, knows there is nothing that excites me more than discovering a new artist. In 1980, I was working at A&A Records on Yonge St. in Toronto (right next door to Sam The Record Man). That year an album came out by a guy named Willie Nile from Buffalo, NY. I listened to the album and freaked. Shorly after that, I got a chance to see him showcasing at the El Mocambo and the live show was every bit as good. He put out another album (Golden Down) the following year and then promptly dropped off the radar for - literally - a decade.

He resurfaced to release another handful of recordings (all of them good) and then promptly got under the radar again. When I opened The Carleton, I started nosing around, looking for artists and thought of Willie again. To my surprise, he'd just released an album called "Streets of New York" that was absolutely amazing. I contacted his management to see if it would be even remotely possible to get Willie to Halifax. The bar opened, things got busy and our shows got better and better. When I heard that Willie was releasing a new record - "House of 1000 Guitars" - I immediately bought it and realized that it was even better than the last one! I got back in touch...

So, with as much fanfare as I can muster, I am thrilled to announce that Willie Nile will be playing The Carleton on Sunday, July 19th. The show will start at 9 PM and tickets are $25 + taxes.

I understand perfectly well that a lot of you will not know who this artist is but I am confident that if you check out the link above and listen to the music, you'll be as excited as I am about this show. I also know that press clippings are often for chumps but if you won't/or don't want to take my word for it, maybe some of these accolades will ring true for you...

“A one-man Clash! – UNCUT

“BRILLIANT…AMAZING…an utter embarrassment of riches! The first great album of 2009!” - POWER POP

“He’s a master…it’s amazing…one of the best albums I’ve ever heard!”
NORM WINER (WXRT)

“Nile has never released anything less than great. (House Of A Thousand Guitars) is ANOTHER GEM from one of the most underrated singer-songwriters of our time.” – NO DEPRESSION

“Nile spins another ROCK ‘N’ ROLL CLASSIC! Talk about a second wind! His Benjamin Button-like excursion continues with House of a Thousand Guitars, featuring a dozen songs that capture both the heart of rock ‘n’ roll and the depth of middle-age. Mark this one down for your end-of-the year best-of list.” – HYPERBOLIUM

“He’s never been better!”  **** HITS MAGAZINE

“Every bit as good as Streets of New York.” – HIGH NOON SALOON

“He is one of the most moving artists of the last 30 years in the US rock scene. PURE DYNAMITE!
Maybe because of a pact with the devil, time seems to have stopped, for he’s cryonized in his youth, and in front of the microphone he’s a hurricane!”
– 20 MINUTES

“REMARKABLE new album!...RIVETING!...Springsteen, Mellencamp, Van Morrison…Willie Nile has earned his standing in that esteemed company!” – BLURT

“The Troubadour Of New York City. This album has SOME OF THE MOST MEANINGFUL LYRICS YOU’VE EVER HEARD. The Ramones meet Sun Records. Doesn't have an artificial or cheaply sentimental bone in its body. Nile's music is an organic blending of the old and the new that yields ASTONISHING results. Honesty, integrity, and a sense of the absurd combined with a razor sharp wit. Nile continues to create music like few others. – BLOGCRITICS

“Willie Nile’s “Magdalena” is the ‘Coolest Song in the World!’”
 LITTLE STEVEN (UNDERGROUND GARAGE)

“If authenticity is an important issue for you, then Willie Nile is your man. He is the bastard child of Bob Dylan, Joe Strummer and Lou Reed. His enthusiasm for music and love and life is one of his greatest selling points. That, and he’s a terrific songwriter. On House of a Thousand Guitars, both of Willie Nile’s strongest traits are on full display once more. “
POP MATTERS

“If it were only for the STUNNING pop beauty of "Her Love Falls Like Rain" and the anthem "Give Me Tomorrow," Nile's House of a Thousand Guitars would be one of the year's essential discs. However, Nile keeps the quality high throughout the album. Every listen can produce a new favorite.” – KNOXVILLE NE WS-SENTINEL

“A songsmith’s songsmith.” – THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE

His fans include Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams and... well, you get the drift. I would desperately love to do two shows with Willie but in order for that to happen, I'm going to have to sell the first one out fast. If this has caught your interest, buy your tickets NOW!
