Mike's Blog
Now that I've finally gotten some sleep, I'd like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, Carleton staff and performers for pulling off a fantastic Halifax Urban Folk Festival at our place leading up to, and including, the Labour Day weekend.
And I'd like to especially thank all the lovely people who showed their support by buying tickets for those very cool shows. Every night was a treat. However, the Sunday night show (September 5th) with the songwriter's circle of Michael Weston King, Ron Hawkins and John Wesley Chisholm opening up and Willie Nile (with band) as the main event was, without doubt, the most electrifying night we've ever had at The Carleton.
I can't even properly put it into words. If you were there, you know what I'm talking about. If you weren't, you should start kicking yourself around the block now. Luckily - for you - our Bell/Aliant sponsors shot the whole thing in HD and you'll be able to see it on Aliant.net soon.
Now we just have to start getting ready for all the other cool shows we've got coming up this fall!
Enough about us, what do you think of us...
We get letters and e-mails, thought we could share a few with you....
Before we get to customers' thoughts, how about a few nice things that some of the artists who've played the room sent to us on the occasion of our 1st anniversary...
We are, after all, a bar. Therefore, we will sell drinks. We offer all kinds of very excellent libations - as you'd expect - but I'll outline a few obvious things you should know about our joint...
Martinis
We are fans of the Martini. I'm not talking about blended drinks in martini glasses, I'm talking about maritinis - gin and/or vodka in a martini glass with a hint of Vermouth and a garnish of your choice. We take our martinis seriously enough to have gone to the trouble of securing an under-bar freezer so the gin and vodka is "frozen" before it gets to your glass. People thought we were nuts but I know you'll appreciate the effort once you order one. Oh, you can still get mixed drinks in a martini glass if you really want to!
Wines
At The Carleton we have a healthy love and respect for wines. That's why we have a pretty big selection of affordable reds and whites - along with bubbly, sparkling, sweet and rosy ones. We also know that you work hard for your money and shouldn't have to take out a second mortgage to be able to afford to indulge a little.
All our wines are reasonably priced (I'll say we have the most reasonably priced wine in this, or any city) and many are available by the glass. Check out the Bar/Dine tab on this website for a list of what we've got to offer.
Beer
We like beer too. We just didn't want to devote vast amounts of bar space to taps that get in the way of conversation. To that end, we offer a limited number of draughts (including Keith's, Stella and Guinness) but have a pretty decent selection of bottled beer in our extra-cold fridges.
SpiritsWe've got lots of these too! Name your poison. A variety of Gin and Vodka in our unique in bar freezer. Oh baby it's cold in here. Single malt scotch in a mutiple variety.
We are a bar with great food. Our kitchen has been working hard on fresh new daily specials. We have added to the lunch menu to bring you more value conscious choices, some on the lighter side, so you can go back to work after lunch. We are working on the menu all of the time so keep checkng us out.
Our venue features intimate (100 seats) shows by some of the best artists you'll ever get a chance to see in these circumstances. Our shows are considered special events and will happen as the talent, and opportunity, presents. Go to the Music Tab on this site for more info.
Dinner reservations are recommended for preferred seating. All shows are 19+. For packed out shows you may be sharing a table. Keep an eye on our upcoming performances
